WMR says that he and DGR chanted
this “extemporized effusion” when they “received notes
from Maria.” He attributes the composition to DGR and suggests—incorrectly—that
“These seem to be the first rhymes he ever concocted, and, if so, he rhymed in
Italian earlier than in English” (see
Memoir I page 58).
WMR says he found the verses copied out in one of his father's letters
of September 1836.
