Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

The A2 Proofs, first pulled around 20 September 1869, passed through two states. This is a partial (corrected) copy of the first state, whereas the Fitzwilliam Copy represents the second state. The Princeton/Troxell Copy 2 of these proofs is another partial proof of the first state. The latter is uncorrected except for a few printer's corrections. Ashley 1399, in the British Library, is another set of partial A2 Proofs in the first state. With the exception of a duplicate of pages 13-14, the latter contains only pages that do not appear in this Princeton/Troxell partial proof.
