               <p>This is a page from the second revise proof for the front matter of DGR's 1881 <xref doc="a.1-1881.raw">

                        <hi rend="i">Poems. A New Edition.</hi>
                     </title>
                  </xref> It was probably printed off in June 1881. From this was printed the final proof for
      the edition, a <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga.del.rad">perfect copy</xref> of which is preserved in
      the library of the Delaware Art Museum.</p>
               <p>The <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga.prin1.rad">duplicate</xref> of this page, with DGR's more
      explicit note to the printer, is also at Princeton. That copy also has one further correction
      to the text.</p>

               <p>DGR revised the initial proofs for the front matter for this book twice, and the library of
      the Delaware Art Museum preserves six partial sets of earlier proofs for this signature where
      one can track DGR's successive acts of revision. In addition to a <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga.del.rad">complete final proof</xref>, Delaware has a <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga5.del.rad">corrected copy</xref> of pages i-iv plus an <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga6.del.rad">uncorrected revise</xref> for those pages; two copies (both
      partial) of the first author's proof, <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga1.del.rad">copy 1</xref> and
       <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga2.del.rad">copy 2</xref>; and two partial copies of the first revise,
       <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga3.del.rad">copy 1</xref> and <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga4.del.rad">copy
       2</xref>, both also with revisions. Besides this proof page, the Princeton Library has
      another <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga.prin1.rad">duplicate</xref> corrected proof page. </p>

            <p> &#8216;<hi rend="sc">MANY</hi> poems in this volume were written between <lb/>1847 and
     1853. Others are of recent date, and a few <lb/>belong to the intervening period. It has been
     thought <lb/>unnecessary to specify the earlier work, as nothing is <lb/>included which the
     author believes to be immature.&#8217;</p>
            <p>The above brief note was prefixed to these poems <lb/>when first published in 1870. They have
     now been <lb/>for some time out of print.</p>
            <p>The fifty sonnets of the <title level="wrk">
                  <hi rend="i">House of Life</hi>
               </title> which first <lb/>appeared here are now embodied with the full series in <lb/>the
     volume entitled <title level="doc">
                  <xref doc="a.2-1881.raw">&#8216;Ballads and Sonnets.&#8217;</xref>
               </title>

            <p>The fragment of <xref doc="a.2-1848.s221.raw">
                  <title level="wrk">
                     <hi rend="i">The Bride's Prelude</hi>
                  </title>
               </xref>, now first <lb/>printed, was written very early, and <del>takes its place here</del>
               <add>is here associated</add>
               <lb/>with other work of the same date; though its pub- <lb/>lication in an unfinished <del>state
     </del>
               <add>form</add> needs some indulgence.</p>
