                    <p>DGR revised the initial proofs for the front matter for this book twice, and
                        the library of the Delaware Art Museum preserves six partial sets of earlier
                        proofs for this signature where one can track DGR's successive acts of
                        revision. In addition to the <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga.del.rad">complete
                            final proof</xref>, the library has a <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga5.del.rad">corrected copy</xref> of pages i-iv plus an
                            <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga6.del.rad">uncorrected revise</xref> for those
                        pages; two copies (both partial) of the first author's proof, this copy and
                            <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga2.del.rad">copy 2</xref>; and two partial copies
                        of the first revise, <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga3.del.rad">copy 1</xref>and
                            <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga4.del.rad">copy 2</xref>, both also with
                        revisions. The Princeton Library has two further fragmentary proofs for ths
                        signature, both corrected pages for the revise proof: <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga.prin.rad">copy 1</xref> and <xref doc="a.1-1881.siga.prin1.rad">copy 2</xref>. </p>

                    period. It has been thought <lb/>unnecessary to specify the earlier work, as
                    nothing is <lb/>included which the author believes to be immature.&#8217;</p>

                    <delspan>It is not unlikely that some may be displeased at<lb/>seeing the
                        addition thus made here late to the ballad of<lb/>&#8216;Sister Helen&#8217;. The
                        writer's best excuse is the belief<lb/>that others will wonder with himself
                        how such a climax<lb/>failed to enter into the first conception.</delspan>
                </p>
                <p>The fragment of <del>&#8216;</del>The Bride's Prelude<del>&#8217;</del>, now first
                    <lb/>printed, was written <delspan>earlier than almost anything in the
                        <lb/>present volume. There may perhaps be readers not <lb/>unwilling to have
                        it preserved;</delspan>
                    <addspan>very early, and takes its place here <lb/>with other work of the same date;</addspan>
                    <lb/>though its appearance <lb/>in an unfinished state needs some indulgence.</p>
