The poem was originally printed at page 409 of <xref doc="a.1-1861.raw"> <title level="wrk"> <hi rend="i">The Early Italian Poets</hi> but was cancelled there at the last minute and replaced by another sonnet bearing the same title. DGR left the sonnet unpublished in his lifetime, probably because he judged its subject would be too strong for his contemporary audience. This sonnet was first printed posthumously (1911) by DGR's brother.
