This extensive first part of the article in the 1 December 1850 publication was DGR's work. Its edged remarks on the current institutional situation of British art and artists inevitably recall the similar attitude taken by the hero of DGR's tale <hi rend="i">St. Agnes of Intercession</hi> , which DGR was writing at the same time.
