The Salutation of Beatrice.

This picture embodies Dante's world-famous

sonnet in the Vita Nuova,—
  • “Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare
  • La donna mia quand'ella altrui saluta,” &c
  • “My lady looks so gentle & so pure
  • When yielding salutation by the way,” &c
Beatrice advances down the street

while Dante together wit with the

winged figure of Love beside him looks

after her as the goes. These figures are

beside a well in the ancient Florentine

street.
