Ben so che fosti figliuol d'Alighieri

This manuscript has on its recto a transcription of the original Italian sonnet, and on the verso some notes DGR made toward the long prose commentary he printed with his Donati Forese translations in The Early Italian Poets

The small manuscript is among a cache of materials originally in the possession of WMR and after that of John Robert Wahl. They finally passed into the library of the South African National Gallery.

The date of DGR transcription is conjectural, but the placement of the poem by DGR in an appendix is suggestive. Furthermore, the paper is very like the paper that we know dates from about 1860.
