Little is known about this early (mid-thirteenth-century) Siculo-Tuscan poet, who wrote two canzoni and a sonnet. Each of those works is remarkable, however, and DGR's (very free) translation of this splendid canzonetta is quite equal to the original. The poem, both original and translation, develops a highly personal energy that invigorates the poem's conventional apparatus. The clipped metrical form contributes notably to this effect.
