Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

In the the 1 June 1850 issue of The Critic, WMR reviewed the current exhibition at the Royal Academy. DGR wrote eleven individual notices that comprise portions of the longer articles written for The Critic by WMR. In this notice, part of WMR's 1 June review, DGR comments on a picture that took for its subject a passage from Milton's “L'Allegro”. As in his comments on the picture in the same exhibition by Charles Lear, DGR praises this work for its poetical qualities.

The artist was probably the genre painter Edward Sherard Kennedy, who was living and working in London in the early 1850s.

Printing History

First published as part of WMR's notice in The Critic and later collected by WMR in his edition of 1911.
