Introduction

This is an uncorrected partial copy of the first author's proof of Signature A. Though undated, this proof must have been pulled between 19-23 May. It carries the correction that DGR called for in the first proof (dated 19 May in the British Library set of mixed proofs) but not the redesign correction for page v, which first appears in print in the proofs dated 23 May. The proof corresponds exactly to the copy preserved in the set of mixed proofs preserved at Harvard.

Textual History: Revision

Besides this copy of the first author's proof, the Delaware Art Museum library has two uncorrected copies of the firest revise, copy 1 and copy 2 (both dated 23 May 1881). The British Library proofs have a corrected copy of the first author's proof for this signature (dated 19 May and marked 1).
