Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This is a complete copy (undated and unnumbered ) of the first revise proof of Signature K of the Ballads and Sonnets volume. After this proof DGR made some significant additions and alterations to this section of the ballad at pages 138-141. As most of the pages are uncut, this would have been an extra proof unseen by DGR and unused by the compositors.

Textual History: Revision

In addition to this complete first revise, the library of the Delaware Museum of Art contains the following proof materials for Signature K of DGR's Ballads and Sonnets volume: a complete copy of the first author's proof (dated 14 April 1881 and numbered 1); the complete author's copy of the first revise and a duplicate of that (both dated 22 April 1881 and numbered 3); a complete copy of the second revise (undated and numbered 1); an incomplete copy of the third revise (dated 31 May 81 and unnumbered); and a complete copy of the final revise (dated 2 Jun and unnumbered). The British Library proofs have another copy of the first author's proofs for this signature (dated 14 Apr 81 and numbered 1).
