               <head>Introduction</head>

               <p>
<!-- &#x201c;Rose Mary&#x201d; is one of DGR's most ambitious poems, conceived and accomplished by the poet at Kelmscott during the happy period which followed the successful release of his <xref doc="a.1-1870.raw.xml"><hi rend="i">Poems</hi></xref> (1870). &#x201c;Rose Mary&#x201d; is by far the longest, most fully-realized of DGR's ballads. The work has rightly been called "a sort of super-ballad" (M&#x00e9;groz 265) on account of the way in which it enfolds into one long poem what seems like the story matter of several other, shorter ballads. &#x201c;Rose Mary&#x201d; thus may be read as a kind of pastiche of the ballad form, in which generic conventions are deployed again and again in a continual rediscovery of dramatic possibility. The ballad's plot encompasses the following sequence of elements: near the poem's beginning, the heightened tension surrounding Rose Mary's scrying of the Beryl-stone gives way to her confession to her mother that she has shared a &#x201c;secret sin&#x201d; (II.69) with her betrothed, Sir James of Heronhaye; the divulgence of that shame in turn gives way to the devestating news that Sir James has been murdered on the road to Holycleugh; an even more difficult uncovering soon follows, when Rose Mary's mother, praying at the side of Sir James' corpse, discovers the love letter which divulges his secret intent to betray her daughter in favor of another woman; and each of those earlier climactic moments are finally eclipsed by Rose Mary's battle with the Beryl Spirits. DGR handles this superabundance of narrative incident with skill, couching these different episodes within three distinct Parts, with the Beryl Songs following after, offering chorus-like commentaries on the characters and their actions.</p>

<p>DGR's characteristic economy of detail, in which each idea or object is pared down to its essentials, serves to offset the near surplus of dramatic story found in &#x201c;Rose Mary.&#x201d; Although DGR himself criticized the poem for lacking &#x201c;the incisive concentration of such a piece as <bibl><xref doc="a.2.1851.s220.raw.xml">&#x2018;Sister Helen&#x2019;</xref></bibl> &#x201d; (<bibl><author>Fredeman</author>, <hi rend="i">Correspondence</hi> 71.149</bibl>), Pater singled out the ballad especially for just this sort of particularized, carefully-wrought detail, remarking that the &#x201c;vignettes&#x201d; which Rose Mary sees within the Beryl-stone &#x201c;attest, by their very freshness and simplicity, to a pictorial and descriptive power in dealing with the inanimate world, which is certainly also one half of the charm, in that other, more remote and mystic, use of it&#x201d; (<bibl><xref doc="a.pr99.p32.rad">&#x201c;Dante Gabriel Rossetti&#x201d;</xref>, 234-235</bibl>). Like the Beryl visions, the description of the altar cell (III.71-85) stands as a signal instance of DGR's descriptive power in this work:</p>

<lg n="15" type="quintain">
<l n="71">The altar-cell was a dome low-lit,</l>
<l n="72">And a veil hung in the midst of it:</l>
<l n="73">At the pole-points of its circling girth</l>
<l n="74">Four symbols stood of the world's first birth,&#x2014;</l>
<l n="75">Air and water and fire and earth.</l></lg>

<lg n="16" type="quintain">
<l n="76">To the north, a fountain glittered free;</l>
<l n="77">To the south, there glowed a red fruit-tree;</l>
<l n="78">To the east, a lamp flamed high and fair;</l>
<l n="79">To the west, a crystal casket rare</l>
<l n="80">Held fast a cloud of the fields of air.</l></lg>

<lg n="17" type="quintain">
<l n="81">The painted walls were a mystic show</l>
<l n="82">Of time's ebb-tide and overflow;</l>
<l n="83">His hoards long-locked and conquering key,</l>
<l n="84">His service-fires that in heaven be,</l>
<l n="85">And earth-wheels whirled perpetually.</l></lg>

<p>This close imagining of the altar cell and its contents is almost infinitesimally particularized&#x2014;&#x201c;mystically condensed,&#x201d; to invoke DGR's own language (<bibl><author>Fredeman</author>, <hi rend="i">Correspondence</hi> 71.150</bibl>). The four elements quietly assume their stations at the compass points; Time's most secret compartments are inventoried in the wall-fresco. Blending material and spiritual, the passage displays that strange fusion of realist and visionary tendencies which Pater located at the center of DGR's poetry. Everywhere in his works, DGR's language exhibits a tendency towards intensification, or a &#x201c;<hi rend="i">literalizing</hi>&#x201d;, in which &#x201c;perceived and unperceived phenomena&#x201d; may be seen to manifest in material form (McGann, &#x201c;Introduction,&#x201d; in DGR, <hi rend="i">Collected Poetry and Prose</hi> xxiii). These moments of intense seeing can be found scattered up and down &#x201c;Rose Mary.&#x201d;</p>

<p>Indeed, such moments of insight and clarification seem preternaturally appropriate for a ballad containing a seeing stone and acts of clairvoyance; they mark the points in which the poem's matter and form coalesce in an almost occult fashion, drawing together as accomplices Rose Mary, the seeing poet, and the witnessing reader. Once it is seen this way, the poem, like its Beryl-stone, becomes &#x201c;a sort of mimic-world&#x201d; (<bibl><author>Fredeman</author>, <hi rend="i">Correspondence</hi> 71.150</bibl>)&#x2014;a &#x201c;World of our world&#x201d; (I.34)&#x2014;and it self-consciously acknowledges this spectacular alignment of literary and magical arts when Rose Mary gazes into the Beryl-stone and declares, &#x201c;As 'twere the turning leaves of a book, / The road runs past me as I look&#x201d; (I.101-102). The special charm of &#x201c;Rose Mary&#x201d; occurs in these moments when the reader recognizes that the poem and its Beryl-stone alike are powerfully crafted lures for attention.-->
</p>

               <p>DGR's ballad represents an effort to work out a tale of redemption in a world where all the characters, including the redeemer, are sinners. At the same time, the story involves an investigation of the function of art, for the Beryl-stone is clearly a figural embodiment of art and poetry as conceived in terms of Romantic Imagination. The resolution offered in the poem is interesting precisely because it is so equivocal. When Rose Mary destroys the stone's magical powers, the spirits of evil are not eliminated. Indeed, they flee abroad into the world. Rose Mary's act emblemizes a judgment on the illusions of Romantic Imagination. The poem's moral&#8212;it preoccupies nearly all of DGR's work&#8212;centers in the need for truth-telling and clarity of mind in a world riven by falsehood, secret fears, and hypocrisies.</p>
               <p>The Beryl Songs comprise one of the most arresting and controversial features of the poem. WMR's note in his <xref doc="a.pr5240.f11.rad" from="660">1911</xref> edition is important: &#8220;The very general opinion has been that they were
                better away; I cannot but agree with it, and indeed the author did so
                eventually. I have heard my brother say that he wrote them to show that
                he was not incapable of the daring rhyming and rhythmical exploits of
                some other poets. As to this point readers must judge. It is at any rate
                true that in making the word &#8216;Beryl&#8217; the pivot of
                his experiment, a word to which there are the fewest possible rhymes, my
                brother weighted himself heavily. Also
                the &#8216;Beryl-songs&#8217; have a
                certain semi-tangible impressiveness, which tends to elevate the calibre
                of the poem as a whole.&#8221;</p>

For Part III, the following stanzas lack prose equivalents:  3-9, 12-19, 21-28, 32-33, 36-37, and 44 (<bibl>

               <p>In answer to a query about the name &#8220;Rose Mary,&#8221; DGR told Watts-Dunton that he chose it because it seemed &#8220;a specially <hi rend="i">virginal</hi> name appropriate to the Seeress of the Beryl&#8221; (<bibl>
                     <author>Fredeman</author>, <hi rend="i">Correspondence</hi>, <pages> 81.216</pages>
                  </bibl>). The contemporary numbers of <hi rend="i">Notes &amp; Queries</hi> also seem to have played a role in DGR's choice of a name for the ballad and its heroine, as well as some topical detail. DGR read <hi rend="i">Notes &amp; Queries</hi> with great devotion throughout 1871, often recommending articles to friends (<bibl>
                     <author>Fredeman</author>, <hi rend="i">Correspondence</hi>, <pages> 71. 113, 123</pages>
                  </bibl>). He would have followed with especially close attention two query strands under discussion during 1871&#8212;the first strand, running from March through May, seeking to trace the symbolism attached to the flowering herb Rosemary; the second strand, appearing in July and August numbers, pursuing historical and literary examples of a &#8220;Berall Stone.&#8221; </p>

               <p>Henry Treffry Dunn later reported that he had provided DGR with the initial inspiration for calling the magic crystal a &#8220;Beryl-stone.&#8221; A Cheyne Walk acquaintance of DGR and Dunn claimed to possess the seeing stone of the London magician, Dr. John Dee. Dunn was able to view the stone, and he related what he had seen to DGR. The poet immediately seized upon the possibilities contained within the word &#8220;Beryl,&#8221; explaining: &#8220;It is better than crystal in every way; it is more rhythmical, and has a greater seeming of mysticism in its sound. Moreover, it is one of the mystic stones named in <hi rend="i">Revelations</hi>&#8221; (Dunn, <hi rend="i">Recollections</hi> 63).</p>

               <p>&#8220;Rose Mary&#8221; has various debts to the tradition of gothic fiction. In particular, the story owes some of its supernatural weirdness to the tales of E. T. A. Hoffman. DGR's correspondence indicates that he also had in mind certain scenes of clairvoyance which he had once read in the anthropological and literary works of the Orientalist Edward William Lane. Especially pertinent are Lane's translation of the <title level="wrk">
                     <hi rend="i">Arabian Nights</hi>

The similarities end at that point, however. <!--Indeed, when it is read in light of the decidedly more accomplished &#x201c;Rose Mary,&#x201d; <hi rend="i">Sir Hugh the Heron</hi> seems to acquire a level of precociousness which DGR himself was reluctant to grant it. Both ballads&#x2014;written some 30 years apart from each other&#x2014;evidence many of the poet's abiding preoccupations, perhaps most notably, the intersecting topics of love and clairvoyance. In addition, the name of Rose Mary's unfaithful lover, Sir James of Heronhaye, carries a clear echo of the name of the hero of DGR's earlier epononymous work. Despite these similarities, the final differences are accute. The events acted out by the characters of &#x201c;Rose Mary&#x201d; occur in a fallen world shadowed darkly by sins and betrayals. Unlike the more fortunate (and less remarkable) heroine in <hi rend="i">Sir Hugh the Heron</hi>, Rose Mary is abandoned by her lover and left alone to face down her enemies, the Spirts of the Beryl-stone.--></p>
