In a letter to WMR (23 January 1845) DGR praises Mérimée's story and remarks on its “Corsican ballads, exactly in the style of the old English poets; one of which pleased me so much that I took the trouble of translating it” (see Fredeman, <xref doc="a.">Correspondence</xref> I. 39).
