Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This is the final poem in the series of verse epistles that DGR sent back to his Pre-Raphaelite brethren from Belgium and France in the fall of 1849. DGR's unpleasant xenophobia is on full display. WMR would later collect the poems under the title A Trip to Paris and Belgium.

Textual History: Composition

The sonnet was composed at the end of October 1849, when DGR and Holman Hunt returned from their trip to the continent.

Printing History

First printed by WMR in 1898 in The Pall Mall Magazine, then first collected in his 1911 edition of DGR's Works.
