Introduction

This is one of at least three limericks DGR wrote on his friend William Bell Scott. In his in his Autobiographical Notes . Scott published complete versions of two and the first two lines of the third. This one appeared at II. 148, the other at II. 188.

WMR compiled DGR's numerous limericks into a single sequence, more or less arbitrarily arranged, in his 1911 edition. A general commentary on DGR's limericks and their context is available.

Textual History: Composition

The verses were written at Penkill Castle in September 1869. A manuscript of the lines survives.
