Textual History: Composition

The limerick is directed at Franz Hueffer, whom DGR met in 1869 and who eventually became music critic for the London Times. He was a learned and passionate Wagnerian and, as the limerick states, an enthusiast of Schopenhauer. He married Ford Madox Brown's daughter Cathy in 1872 and in 1873 he was DGR's agent for the Tauchnitz edition of his poems.

A general commentary on DGR's limericks and their context is available.
