DGR sent this note to Notes and Queries (4th Series, 18 June 1870 590) in response to a query in the 4 June issue (page 534): “In the Royal Academy Catalogue this year the following lines are used as an epigraph to No. 492 [quotes the opening five lines from Allingham's “The Ruined Chapel”]. Can you inform me where the quotation comes from. H. P.”

Allingham's ballad was published in his The Music Master volume (1855), for which DGR had supplied the illustration for Allingham's ballad “The Maids of Elfen-Mere”.
