Introduction

This pencil fragment is written on paper that is characteristic of DGR's early writing. It seems to represent some verse jottings he made when he was traveling with Holman Hunt on the continent in the autumn of 1849—probably something he had a thought to include among the travel letters he was sending back home to his brother and his other Pre-Raphaelite associates.

The only known text of this work is the rough draft on a small sheet of paper in the library of the South African National Gallery.
