               <head>Introduction</head>
               <p>The epigram&#8212;which WMR called, not without reason, &#8220;unpublishable&#8221;, seems to be a late thrust at Buchanan.  The verses were drafted in a <xref doc="a.nb0004.duke.rad" from="[31]" to="[32]" workcode="46-1871">notebook</xref> around 1878.  The notebook context suggests a close relation between this epigram and the sequence of aphoristic texts that DGR eventually culled for his poem <xref doc="a.34-1871.raw"> 
                     <title level="wrk">&#8220;Soothsay&#8221;</title>
                  </xref>.  Also closely related is the fragment <xref doc="a.15-1878.raw"> 
                     <title level="wrk">&#8220;Anomalies&#8221;</title>
                  </xref>, which may have been originally written to be included among the &#8220;Soothsay&#8221; texts.</p>

               <head>Textual History: Composition</head>
               <p>Four texts or partial texts are known, none titled.  Two are relatively finished:  the <xref doc="a.sonnets.prinms.rad" workcode="46-1871">copy</xref> with  one correction at Princeton, and the fair <xref doc="a.nb0004.duke.rad" workcode="46-1871" from="[31]">notebook copy</xref> at Duke.  These texts vary slightly from each other and the latter has what appears to be a pair of additional lines at the end.  The Duke notebook also has a <xref doc="a.nb0004.duke.rad" workcode="46-1871" from="[32]">draft</xref> of the epigram, and one of the Ashley notebooks has a <xref doc="a.22p-1880.blnb3.rad" from="[28r]">fragment</xref>. </p>
