The revision is a dramatic exposure of how DGR manipulated the biographical context of his poems in order to construct a certain argument and formal order in the sonnet sequence. DGR originally wrote this sonnet to and about Jane Morris, but as it appears in the sequence it refers principally not to the so-called Innominata (the sequence's poetical stand-in for Jane Morris) but to the Beloved (the sequence's stand-in for his wife Elizabeth). </p> </section> <section type="texthistcomp"> <head>Textual History: Composition</head> <p>Three manuscripts of the poem are extant: the earliest is the <xref doc="a.9-1874.bodleianms.rad" workcode="5-1870" from="[25]">holograph fair copy</xref> (Bodleian Library) in the book of so-called <xref doc="a.9-1874.raw">Kelmscott Love Sonnets</xref> that DGR put together as a gift for Jane Morris. From this manuscript was made a <xref doc="a.44-1869.fizms.rad" workcode="5-1870" from="18">copy</xref> by May Morris (in the Fitzwilliam Museum), which carries one important correction by DGR (in line 4). The third is DGR's <xref doc="a.22-1881.troxell.rad" workcode="5-1870" from="[18]">fair copy</xref> (in the Troxell Collection, Princeton U. Library). 1881 <hi rend="i">Ballads and Sonnets</hi> text golden: this reading is a late revision, and it distinctly alters the autobiographical cast of the poem. Golden hair suggests DGR's wife, but in fact the poem was written in April 1870 and the reference is to Jane Morris. The word was originally rippling (see the Fitzwilliam Manuscript and the text in the Kelmscott Love Sonnets).
