Introduction

The manuscript is one of several that survive showing DGR's work on his book of translations, <hi rend="i">The Early Italian Poets</hi> . It contains several interesting texts, including DGR's transcription of the Cecco Nuccoli extended sonnet ”Nel tempo santo non viddio mai petra” , which DGR may have been led by Trucchi to believe was the work of Cecco Angiolieri; extracts from Cino da Pistoia's canzone ”Avvenga m' abbia piu volte per tempo” ; and drafts of two prose notes that would eventually be worked into the 1861 edition of his book of translations.

The manuscript is preserved with a cache of materials originally in the possession of WMR and after that of John Robert Wahl. They finally passed into the library of the South African National Gallery.
