Introduction

DGR did not include translations of the verse of Cecco D'Ascoli (1269-1327) in his two volumes of translations, but he did write a brief critical notice of Cecco's work as part of his commentary on Forese Donati and his translations of the latter's work. DGR's wrote disparagingly of Cecco and Donati but he clearly found their coarse humor amusing and attractive, as he did the works of Cecco Angiolieri (see the commentary on Cecco's sonnet to Dante “On the Last Sonnet of the Vita Nuova”).
