               <p>The text and the related pictures translate, in a double sense, the first six and last five lines of a passage in Guillaume de Lorris's part of the <xref doc="a.">

                  </xref> (lines 1019-1031)&#8212;the description of the lady Beauty (lines 999ff.).  The pictorial treatments build themselves from <xref doc="a.s125.raw">the drawing</xref> that DGR made as a frontispiece for his 
book of translations <xref doc="a.1-1861.raw">

                     </title>
                  </xref>.  The relation is important, showing DGR's effort to illustrate, in several senses, the integrity of the transnational courtly love tradition.</p>

               <p>The translation was composed  in 1850 and first published posthumously by WMR (see <xref doc="a.pr5240.f11.rad" workcode="9-1850.s126" from="537">
                     <title level="wrk">1911</title>
                  </xref>).  WMR published his text from the <xref doc="a.9-1850.dukems.rad">fair copy manuscript</xref> now in the Duke University library, which contains both the <xref doc="a.9-1850.dukems.rad" from="[1a]">French text</xref> and the <xref doc="a.9-1850.dukems.rad" from="[1b]">translation</xref>.  DGR's partial draft translation is in <xref doc="a.1-1861.sangms.rad" from="[1]" workcode="9-1859.s126">a manuscript</xref> of working notes he used at an early stage of his work on <xref doc="a.1-1861.raw">

               <p>Illustrating a central text from the courtly love tradition, <xref doc="a.s126.rap">the oil painting</xref> was probably first executed sometime late in 1861, perhaps 1862.  The <xref doc="a.s126.r-1.rap">watercolour</xref> in the Tate was executed in ten days in April 1864 (see DGR's letter to Ernest Gambart, 26 April 1864, <bibl>
