               <p>This is the first of three sonnets by
or attributed to Boccaccio that DGR translated 
<xref doc="a.1-1861.rad" workcode="6p-1861" from="449">&#8220;for 
their beauty alone&#8221;</xref>. The other two are: 
<xref doc="a.95d-1861.raw">
                     <title level="wrk">&#8220;Of his 
last sight of Fiametta&#8221;</title>
                  </xref>, and
<xref doc="a.96d-1861.raw">
                     <title level="wrk">&#8220;Of three 
Girls and of their Talk&#8221;</title>
                  </xref>. His three other translations 
of Boccaccian sonnets were all made because they showed 
<xref doc="a.1-1861.rad" workcode="6p-1861" from="446">&#8220;the enthusiastic
reverence&#8221;</xref> that Boccaccio had for Dante and his work. These are:

                     <title level="wrk">&#8220;To Dante
in Paradise, after Fiammetta's death&#8221;</title>
                  </xref>.</p>
               <p>DGR's source text for this translation is the sonnet numbered XVII in
the Boccaccio section of the collection

                  </xref> (IV. 17). Contemporary scholars like Ricci, however,
do not include the sonnet among Boccaccio's authoritative works.</p>
