THE selection of pictures in this book is confined to oil-paintings, and in com-piling it the publishers have been guided by that most admirable work, a model of its kind, Mr. H. C. Marillier's monograph on the artist. The pictures have been arranged in chronological order and their dates, as given by Mr. Marillier, appended.

With the object of increasing the usefulness of the volume the publishers have endeavoured to trace the present owners of such of Rossetti's oil-paintings as are still believed to exist. The information they have collected will be found on pages 65 and 66.

The publishers take this opportunity of cordially thanking all those private owners of paintings who have permitted their pictures to be reproduced, more especially as the possessors of such works are here reproduced for the first time.

In this new edition the publishers have been enabled, by the kindness of Mr. C. Fairfax Murray, to include reproductions of two new pictures. The first, “Monna <lb/>Rosa” (page 22), formerly owned by Mrs. Philip Rathbone, was said by Mr. Marillier to be called “Regina Cordium” and to be a replica of theportrait of Mrs. Aldam Heaton, neither of which statements is ac-curate. The second, “Greensleeves”(page 31), was unknown to Mr. Marillier.
