                        <hi rend="c">THE</hi> selection of pictures in this book is <lb/>confined to
                        oil-paintings, and in com-<lb/>piling it the publishers have been guided by <lb/>that
                        most admirable work, a model of its <lb/>kind, <xref doc="a.nd497.r8.m33.rad">Mr.
                            H. C. Marillier's monograph on <lb/>the artist</xref>. The pictures have been
                        arranged <lb/>in chronological order and their dates, as <lb/>given by Mr. Marillier, appended.</hi>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <hi rend="i">With the object of increasing the usefulness <lb/>of the volume the
                        publishers have endeavoured <lb/>to trace the present owners of such of
                        <lb/>Rossetti's oil-paintings as are still believed <lb/>to exist. The information
                        they have collected <lb/>will be found on pages <ref target="A.R.65">65</ref> and
                            <ref target="A.R.66">66</ref>.</hi>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <hi rend="i">The publishers take this opportunity of <lb/>cordially thanking all
                        those private owners of <lb/>paintings who have permitted their pictures <lb/>to be
                        reproduced, more especially as the possessors <lb/>of such works are here
                        reproduced for the <lb/>first time.</hi>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <hi rend="i">In this new edition the publishers have <lb/>been enabled, by the
                        kindness of Mr. C. <lb/>Fairfax Murray, to include reproductions <lb/>of two new
                        pictures. The first, &#8220;<title level="pic" lang="italian">Monna
                            <lb/>Rosa</title>&#8221; <ref target="A.R.22">(page 22)</ref>, formerly
                        owned by Mrs. <lb/>Philip Rathbone, was said by Mr. Marillier <lb/>to be called
                            &#8220;<title level="pic" lang="latin">Regina
                                Cordium</title>&#8221; and to be <lb/>a replica of the<xref doc="a.s323.raw">portrait of Mrs. Aldam <lb/>Heaton</xref>, neither of which
                        statements is ac-<lb/>curate. The second, &#8220;<title level="pic">Greensleeves</title>&#8221;<ref target="A.R.31">(page
                                <lb/>31)</ref>, was unknown to Mr. Marillier.</hi>
