					          <p>The manuscripts and works in this miscellaneous volume of documents are
						mostly early work, though some date from as late as 1878, as the fragment of
							<xref doc="a.1-1878.raw">
							              <title level="wrk">
								                <hi rend="i">The White Ship</hi>
							              </title>
						            </xref> on page 13v shows. These were manuscripts that WMR examined and
						worked over for publishing in his initial 1886 collected edition of his
						brother's works, for some of the publications he made in the 1890s, and also
						for his last collection of 1911.</p>
					          <p>Pages [2]-[5] contain DGR's notes for the translation project that eventually
						became <xref doc="a.1-1861.raw">
							              <title level="wrk">
								                <hi rend="i">The Early Italian Poets</hi>
							              </title>
						            </xref>. WMR's note on page [5v] indicates that the pages were written in
						1860, when DGR was in the last stages of preparing his book for the press.
						Several texts gathered near the end of this volume (pages 16-19) are also
						clearly related to DGR's translation project: his translation of a Cecco
						Angiolieri sonnet, <xref doc="a.55d-1861.raw">
							              <title level="wrk">&#8220;Prolonged Sonnet: When his Clothes were
							gone&#8221;</title>
						            </xref>, his transcription of a Donati Forese sonnet, <xref doc="a.137d-1861orig.raw">

					          <p n="1">The <add>young</add> King of a country is hunting on a day with<lb/>a
							<del>great Earl</del>
						            <add>young Knight</add>, his friend; when, feeling thirsty,<lb/>
						            <del>they</del>
						            <add>he</add> stops at a Forester's cottage, and the Forester's
						daughter<lb/>brings <del>them</del>
						            <add>him</add> a cup of water to drink. Both of<lb/>them are equally
						enamoured at once of her<lb/>unequalled beauty. The King however has
						been<lb/>affianced from boyhood to a Princess, worthy of all<lb/>love and
						whom he has always believed he loved<lb/>until undeceived by his new
						absorbing passion;<lb/>but the <del>Earl</del>
						            <add>Knight,</add> resolved to sacrifice all other<lb/>considerations to his
						love, goes again to the<lb/>forester's cottage and asks his daughter's
						hand.<lb/>He finds that the girl has <del>?</del> fixed her thoughts<lb/>on
						the King, <add>whose rank she does not know. On hearing it</add>
						            <del>and this</del> she tells her suitor humbly that<lb/>
						            <del>[illegible]</del> she must die if such be her fate, but<lb/>cannot love

						            <add>Knight</add> goes to the King<lb/>to tell him all and beg his help; and
						the two<lb/>friends then come to an explanation. Ultimately<lb/>the King
						goes to the girl pleads his friend's cause,<lb/>not disguising his own
						passion, but saying that<lb/>as he sacrifices himself to honour, so should
						she,<lb/>at his prayer, accept a noble man whom<lb/>he loves better than all
						men and whom she<lb/>will love too. This she does at last; and the<lb/>King
							<add>makes his friend an earl and</add> gives <del>them</del>
						            <add>him</add> a grant of the forest and<lb/>surrounding country as a
						marriage gift, <del>and</del>
						            <lb/>
						            <del>being/ builds a hunting lodge on the spot where <lb/>the cottage stood,

						their practice <lb/>of hunting on that day, for sixteen years.<lb/>When the
						anniversary comes round for the<lb/>sixteenth time since the lady's death,
						the<lb/>Earl tells his daughter, who has grown to<lb/>her mother's perfect
						likeness (but whom the<lb/>King has never seen), to meet them on the<lb/>old
						spot with the cup of water, as her mother<lb/>first did when of the same
						age. The King,<lb/>on seeing her, is deeply moved; but on her<lb/>being
						presented to him by the Earl, he is<lb/>about to take the cup from her hand,
						when<lb/>he is aware of a second figure in her<lb/>exact likeness, but
						dressed in peasant's<lb/>clothes, who steps to her side as he bends<lb/>from
						his horse to take the cup, looks in<lb/>his face with solemn words of love
						and<lb/>welcome, and kisses him on the mouth.<lb/>He falls forward on his
