               <p>Brown began the essay in January 1850 and completed it by
the 22nd (see <xref doc="a.nd467.5.p7r58.rad" link="dead" from="45">WMRprb</xref> page 45). The second (projected) part of the essay was
never written, much to WMR's disappointment. The essay clearly shows
Brown's interest in history painting, and in particular his committment
to a thoroughly historicized treatment of his materials and subjects.</p>
