Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

The letter to Scott contains a text of DGR's epigram “Address to the D—l (Dalziel brothers)”.

Reception History

WMR emended the final line in his Collected Works of 1911, making the dramatic character of the stage direction more obvious. In doing so, however, WMR assigned the laughter to the Dalziel brothers, whereas the present source manuscript leaves the source ambiguous; DGR might as easily have been laughing as the Dalziels.
