Scholarly Commentary
Introduction
This manuscript in preserved in the Rossetti/Wahl collection in the library of the National Gallery of South Africa. The left side of the paper is badly water and fire damaged so that recovering the text is extremely difficult. Above the first line of the poem, in pencil, is WMR's note: “? 1848 Sept.”, which seems a shrewd guess made by WMR many years after the poem's original occasion.
The poem is written on one sheet. The text on the recto is in two columns, breaking after line27. The text on the verso commences with line 51.
