Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

Ruskin's dictatorial attitude coupled with DGR's headstrong nature caused conflict between the two men. In his early career DGR greatly admired Ruskin, but came to resent his interference. DGR executed one satirical and one highly finished sketch of Ruskin.

Production History

This work was executed primarily during Millais's four month holiday at Brig O' Turk in Scotland with Ruskin and his wife Effie, with whom Millais fell in love and eventually married.
