Although not as celebrated as his study of The
Renaissance (1873), this book is almost as
important a work. With respect to the study of DGR and the
Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic Movements, it may be more important, not
least for its two key essays,
one focused on DGR,
the other on Morris.
The essay on DGR was first published in Thomas Humphry Ward's
collection of essays The English Poets in 1883.
