Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This watercolour, dating from 1864, is sometimes confused with Fazio's Mistress, another Titian-influenced depiction of a woman combing her hair. This picture is sometimes known under the titles Lady in a White Dress and Lady in White at her Toilet.

The picture is also closely related to Lady Lilith. All of these works have been aptly comparted with Courbet's Portrait of Jo, though influence is doubtful since Courbet's picture dates from 1866.
