Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

See commentary for “Hist!” Said Kate the Queen: the head of this small picture was cut away from the latter and sold separately. The large oil of 1878, A Vision of Fiammetta, has little in common with this portrait besides the nominal allusion to Boccaccio's mistress.

Production History

On 4 December 1866 DGR told George Boyce “that the little Fiammetta is finished and on sale for 80 guineas (N.B. cheap.) I believe you would like it in its present state—very different from when you saw it” (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 66. 183 ). DGR seems to have sold it to Ernest Gambart in early 1867 ( Fredeman, Correspondence, 67. 1 ).
