Production History

This may be the picture that DGR refers to in his letter to George Boyce of February 9, 1867 (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 67. 27 ). It was purchased by the Manchester manufacturer William A. Turner. Surtees observes that “the action of the head and the facial type so closely resemble that of the left-hand bridesmaid in The Beloved that it is probable that Rossetti is here using a study made from the earlier painting” ( Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné, vol. 1, 113 ) See the pencil study for this picture.
