Citing Fredeman, Surtees suggests that this may be an illustration for Johann Wilhelm Meinhold's Sidonia the Sorceress, a book that DGR greatly esteemed (Fredeman, Correspondence, 54.63). However, both Surtees and Fredeman are probably incorrect, as Meinhold's romance was not published until 1847, and translated into English by Lady Wilde in 1849.
