Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

DGR did two versions of this picture, this oil in the summer of 1869, and in 1872 a smaller watercolour replica . Both pictures are completely independent of the late oil (1880-1881) of the same title, as well as of the earlier oil that made up the left panel of a diptych.

Bibliography

Included Text

  • Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare
  • La donna mia guand'ella altrui saluta,
  • Ch'ogni lingua divien tremando muta,
  • Egli occhi non ardicon di guardare.
  • Ella sen va sentendosi laudare
  • Benignamente d'umilta vestuta,
  • Che va dicendo all'anima: sospira.
Note: This sonnet from Dante's Vita Nuova is inscribed on a fictive sheet of paper attached to a tree at the upper left of the painting.
