Introduction

Walter Deverell (1827-1854) was a young artist and DGR's close friend in the early years of the PRB. They met when they were students together at Sass's Academy and in 1851 they shared a studio together in Red Lion Square. He was one of the founders of the Cyclographic Society (1848) and was a member of the Sketching Club as well, and was brought into the PRB by DGR when Collinson left. He was the person who first met and was attracted to Elizabeth Siddal, and who introduced her to DGR. Although Deverell and DGR saw less of each other after 1851, his death of Bright's disease in 1854 was a blow to both DGR and WMR
