Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

“Perhaps the first drawing for the subject; the grouping is essentially the same though the male figure on the extreme left and many of the accessories have not yet been introduced. The head and shoulders of Dante are much rubbed; also part of his clothing” (Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné , vol. 1, 12 (no. 42B)). A sketch, or combination of sketches as the case may be, appears on the verso.
