Note: An inscription by Fairfax Murray appears on verso: “Must be a preparatory sketch for the water–colour Beatrice, meeting Dante at a Wedding feast, denies him her salutation, exhibited c. 1852. Wells, R.A. (W. M. R.), owns the water–colour. The figures in the water–colour are quite different, but no doubt this is a design for the subject. C. F. M.”
