Introduction

Like his portrait of Mrs. Holme Sumner, DGR did this portrait of Mrs. William Cowper-Temple, Lady Mount Temple, when he was staying with the Cowper-Temples at their Broadlands estate in August 1876. He wrote to Watts-Dunton on 13 August of Lady Mount Temple as “my most womanly and most queenly hostess. Her society has been a great thing to me here. I have done a head of her in chalk, but am only half pleased with it. They however are lavish in generous praise of it. As Temple insists on viewing it as a commission (not a gift as I sincerely meant and wished) it will at any rate pay the woodwork expenses” (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 76. 118 ).
