Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This is DGR's original sketch of Tennyson, as reproduced in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, December 1883, p.37. The sketch illustrates an essay on Tennyson by Anne Thackeray Ritchie, and is accompanied by the following footnote: “This early sketch was preserved by Robert Browning, to whose courtesy we are indebted for its use, and was one of the interesting pictures of the Rossetti exhibition held in London after the painter's death. Mrs. Browning was another of the distinguished company.”
