Introduction

This unidentified portrait may possibly be of Sophie Burgess, begun on March, 11th while DGR was with W.J. Stillman at Barbara Bodichon's house, Scalands, Robertsbridge, Hawkhurst, Kent.

Description: A female figure, at three-quarter-length, seated and facing to front with head three-quarters to left, downturned. Her right cheek rests upon her left hand, and her right arm (which lies across her knees) supports the left. The hair is worn forward across the forehead and is tied with two bands that run across the crown of the head. The subject wears a simple dress, with the drapery falling from the right shoulder.
