Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

Surtees questions this drawing's attribution ( vol. 1, 216). Three studies for the drawing lie on the reverse: 1) a profile of the pipe smoker, labelled “J. Doughty”; 2) a profile of the man in glasses, labelled “G. Romilly”; and 3) a hand moving a chess piece.
