Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

See commentary for a related early draughtsmanship study. DGR's interest in capturing theatrical poses and pictorial moments is very clear. In this respect, the influence of his juvenile drawings of puppet theatre figures continues in modified forms.

Pictorial

It has been suggested that the pair might be a study on the theme of the Borgias. See DGR's 1850 Borgia drawing and a possibly related study of the same year.
