Introduction

DGR executed a number of similar drawings between 1844 and 1847. The iconograph of a man and woman seated or standing under a tree held a special erotic fascination for him. This drawing should be compared with an 1844 drawing in pen and ink, an arresting pen and pencil drawing of July 1846, and a more delicate 1844 drawing of 1846-47. The latter three show the figures seated rather than, as here, standing.
