Introduction

DGR's four known drawings on this subject are all conceived on a small scale, in imitation of medieval miniatures. They contrast sharply with the unexecuted painting of the Virgin and Child that DGR projected in 1871. For DGR's prose description see the loose notebook leaf in the Ashley Library. This drawing is of course nothing like that projected picture.
