Introduction

Surtees titles this finished drawing “Woman in Medieval Costume”. But as DGR's gloss running along the left edge of the picture shows, he meant this as a portrait of Beatrice done in Dürer's manner. The parodic accession entry for the “Galleria Pitti” recalls the “figura mistica” that he imagined in the Pitti in his story “Hand and Soul”.
