Surtees also notes that this is Rossetti's “<quote>first treatment of an Arthurian subject, though this particular episode does not occur in Malory's <xref doc="a.malory001.rad" link="dead"> <title level="wrk"> <hi rend="i">Morte d'Arthur</hi> ...This water–colour may have suggested William Morris's poem <hi rend="i">King Arthur's Tomb</hi> in <hi rend="i">Defence of Guinevere</hi> . ”
