Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This drawing was executed at the same time as the Oxford Union murals. According to Surtees, the drawing is “thought to be a satire on the manner in which the University authorities dealt with Mr. Benjamin Woodward, the architect of the Debating Hall” (vol. 1, 55).
